On the 8th April childhood school friends, Cheque and Fireboy DML reflect on their “History”
and how far they’ve come, in their new single out now via EMPIRE.
Probing unhealed wounds of previous relationships and darker times, “History” is as much about looking to the future as it is to the past.
Hailing from Osun State, Nigeria, the 26-year-old rapper, singer and songwriter Cheque - real name
Akinbi Bamidele Brett - is quickly establishing himself as one to watch. Signing to Penthauze Music in 2019, Cheque has earned his spot in the thriving West African music scene, featuring on Phyno’s “Deal With It” album as well as Olamide’s “999” album last year.
Sitting perfectly between Afro-fusion and Trap, Cheque’s breakout 2020 hit “Zoom” - which saw
Wale & Davido on the remix - made waves way beyond his native racking up over 3 million
combined streams and picking up support across the pond in the UK, US, and Canada. With visuals
to follow for “History” and another EP in the works, Cheque continues to challenge what’s expected
from him and carves out his own style and sound.
