You know when you hear that “Juls baby” drop you’re in for a different wave. The afrobeats hitmaker is tried and tested in African music with big collaborations with Mr Eazi, and Burna Boy. However in a sharp twist for his latest effort, he sets his tastes over the Atlantic for a reggae vibe.
Slow Down is a throwback jam if there ever was one, influenced by legends like Buju and Sizzla, but there is an undeniable highlife influenced that will appeal to West Indians and Africans alike. The beat is full of positive vibes that you can’t help but feel.
The beat is a two stepper with an organic feel to it, full of live instrumentation that Juls excels in and really capturing the groove of an old gem but giving it clean modern production.
Agent Sasco’s contributions to the song can’t go unmentioned – he really helps brings a unique mixture of influences to this song in his powerful patois. Rap fans may recognise Agent Sasco as his more provocative alias Assassin – his features on songs by Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar. Those songs were brought hype but as Agent Sasco, he brings melody and flavour to the tune.
I’ll be honest after hearing Agent as Assassin I had no idea he had this kind of sweetboy energy in him, singing an energetic singalong melody about a girl “that’s pretty like the morning sun.”
This song has festival energy, summertime energy, plantain or plaintin - however you want to pronounce it energy. It’s definitely worth sticking on the playlist.
