Leon Bridges has been a sleeper weapon in contemporary R&B and soul music stateside, and this week he digs deep into his R&B roots for a new collaboration with New Orleans crooner Lucky Daye.
Leon is known more for his musicality and soulfulness so it’s a surprise to hear him with Lucky Daye - especially when his last collaborations with bands like Khruangbin and John Mayer have been so different stylistically. This twist is definitely welcome though, as both singers deliver a great duet over Leon’s own guitars and slow, groovy rhythm section.
The song tells a story of falling for a girl and wanting to give her your best, and both singers give great performances. It’s a deceptively atmospheric and spacy single, especially as the reversed guitars and reverbed drums hit in the (unfairly short) bridge.
